Counting is the core of basic math. Once kids learn to count by 1's, they are introduced with skip counting. This is to count by a number larger than one. It can be by 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, and 10's and even by 20's or 100's.

There are numerous of benefits of learning it at elementary grade levels. Kids could utilize easy skip counting worksheets for the task. Once kids know how to count by 2's, 3's or higher numbers, this can help them learn many other math skills.

To get smarter in math, kids need good mental math skills. Students who are competent at this skill, can add and subtract numbers easily. For example, to add 4 to 15, they need not to go up by 1's but they can go up by 4's to add in one step. This broadens their imagination power about number sense.

Similarly, kids who are best at counting backward can learn how to subtract numbers easily. For example, if a student knows 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20; now it is very easy for this student to subtract 5 from 50 or any other number. Hence, learning backward counting is a key math skill too.

Multiplication is the next skill to learn after addition and subtraction. Again students with excellent skipped counting skills start learning times tables very fast. Skip counting is multiplication, actually. If we look at counting by 2's; it is 2 times table. Similarly kids learn 5 times table or 10 times table by skipping the numbers by 5's and 10's respectively.

Once kids are able to multiply then they can use these skills to divide numbers. Hence it also helps kids to learn division, indirectly. So all four math operations are made easy with this skill.

There is another very important elementary math topic named counting money. Counting nickels is skipping the numbers by 5's, similarly it can help kids to add dimes, quarters and fifty cent coins, easily. Many times, teacher or parents use the coins to introduce skip counting to kids. This is a good idea, but the counting coins is the later skill to be learned after skip counting.

Finally, it can be said that skip counting is a very important basic math skill. It worth to spend some time to learn it in lower grades (2nd grade math is the perfect time to learn it). Parents can print skip counting worksheets going online and ask their kids to practice this skill. Math is a subject of learning by doing, once kids learn any math skill then encourage them to practice it using worksheets on that topic.
