For this article, I want you to imagine that you're back at school. You've just listened to your teacher explain a concept that seems as plain as the nose on your face. And because it's so simple, you wonder to yourself: "Why do I have to waste my time doing homework?" In the next few minutes, I'm going to tell you why you had to do it then, and why it's an essential part of your online information products.
I don't know about you, but in school I lost track of the number of times that class lectures seemed so simple. And while there were times when some things were interesting, most of the time it was kind of boring.
But, I noticed that, especially in the math classes, that it was one thing to be told in class what to do, but rather different to actually try it when it was time to study. In fact, I suspected that the teacher had taught us the wrong concept by mistake.
And that's the value of homework. First we learn something new: a principle, a method, or another way of doing things. But until we put it into practice, it's just a theory.
As a information product creator, you may know that product works; but until your customers prove it for themselves, it remains a theory to them.
And that's why it's so important to include some form of application in the products you create. This could take many forms. You could create worksheets or mini-quizzes. You could do what many computer programs do, which is to provide a picture of how the end product or that particular assignment should look when they've finished that homework.
You could also describe what they will be able to do as a result of completing that particular assignment. If they can't do, then they haven't understood what you taught. But there's no way that they would have known had they not has an assignment to complete in the first place.
But, there's another thing that you must not overlook. If you want to be sure that your product works as you have claimed that it does, then you must do the homework as well; exactly in the manner that you have described it. Because if you don't, you'll never be able to identify why your customers haven't obtained the results that they hoped to get.
Home is an essential part of the information products you create for your online business. Make sure that you include it every time.
