It is very common to hear parents complain about their child's performance in school particularly in the math subject. For this reason, a lot of specialized learning institutions have been established both by the public and private sectors. Different learning institutions like private tutorials and workshop centers are much more focused on helping children not only understand the subject but most importantly overcome any possible frustration with the subject.

While parents are struggling to find effective methods of teaching their children, children are also beginning to lose their interest in the subject because they are embarrassed, frustrated, and confused. Then they develop the "I hate Math attitude."

What to do if your child hates math or has difficulty in it?

Instead of fretting or complaining about your child's performance (which will just add to your child's disappointment), educators say the best way to be successful is to help him or her overcome frustrations or disappointments.

Find the right starting point. Reputable math learning centers usually provide a diagnostic test to find the most appropriate learning techniques for your child. Carefully chosen materials will also help your child build confidence and develop self-esteem. In fact, cool math techniques for kids are great ways to help children develop a positive attitude not only towards math but even to other subjects.

Here are some techniques used by math learning centers you might find helpful for your child at home:

Written Technique. For achieving a framework for the orderly development of mathematical thought and skills, you should encourage your child to do written practice through drills and worksheets because it is a very integral part of mathematics education.

Visual technique. This technique makes problem solving very interesting. Use pictures, charts, and tables to explain ideas and concepts. You may also find workbooks that are picture-based to provide your child with insights into problems and transcend the written words.

Mental technique. Teach your child how and when to use mental math techniques. For example, when adding 9+9+9, ask them to think 10+10+10=30-3=27 all the way to higher numbers.

Verbal technique. This is very helpful particularly when your child is more interested in language. Teach your child the meaning of root words in the mathematics context. You may also teach him or her how to verbally explain her thought process and reasoning. For example, you teach percent by breaking down the word into "per CENT" and it would mean "for each 100". With this definition, 5% of 200 would let her or him think 5 for the first 100 and 5 for the second 100. Therefore, 5+5 = 10.

Tactile Technique. If your child loves playing with cards, dice, chips, and other manipulative, this technique will surely interest him or her. You can use various types of manipulative to teach your child the concepts of math. Counting chips are best for learning the four major mathematical operations which are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. For learning probability, dice and cards are the most appropriate tool.
